Reading
Reading is an enjoyable pastime and an important skill for life. While your child has to learn to read, we also want them to enjoy reading. Let your children become comfortable and confident before moving to more difficult texts. There are some tips on this website that provide really clear and important advice about reading with your children.
Teaching set 1 speed sounds through Fred talk
We teach children how to 'sound out' words using a programme called 'Read Write Inc' with a character called 'Fred'who helps us sound out the words. It provides children with a rhyme to help them remember each sound and how it is written.

Read Write Inc letter sounds
Download the file here for a list of the sounds with their corresponding pictures. These will help you prompt your children to correctly start their letters when writing. We add a "Ski Slope" at the start of letters and a "Flick" at the end.

High frequency or Common Words
In addition to being able to 'sound out' words to read fluently children must be able to 'sight read' the first 200 'high frequency words' click on the pictures below for a copy of each list.
